Curiosity and Withholding Judgement

This week we had the opportunity to speak with Billy Warden- and man was it a fascinating conversation. What I loved most was his journey. And it wasn’t specifically his journey that was amazing - but his personal growth along the way. 

I am the first one to admit that I have a hard time understanding the world. There are things I just don’t get. Situations I have no idea how they happened. And people that truly baffle me. It all comes from a place of judgment and inserting my opinion on what I think the world SHOULD be. 

I always thought that was ok because even though I thought these things, I never inserted my opinion unsolicited. I am not the one to get all up in arms about how someone is living their life - I just took the stance of - “you do you.” 

But Billy really pushed back on that. I may not be vocalizing my opinions- but I have opinions. And those opinions disregard the very soul of that person. It creates a barrier between us where I have no desire to get to know them or to even understand them. I just make assumptions. 

In a world where we all feel the need to give our hot take, the concept of taking a pause, attempting to just listen, and to abandon all preconceived opinions - is radical. And isn’t it crazy that the idea of approaching someone with an open mind is radical? All I know is that it is so needed in our world today! And I know that this is an area where I need to change and where I will be trying to change.

I hope that you take this week to be curious, open your mind to someone you don't understand, and let go of those preconceived notions.
