Are you afraid of money, too? Conversations with Sisters

"You don't have to hustle your life away to be successful. I think that was such an amazing, wise thing to say. She was talking about how she wanted her daughter to see that you don't have to hustle your life away to be successful, and I think that there is something a little broken about our society that we celebrate and we encourage hustle culture so much."

Such a poignant thought - that hustling your life away is not the only path toward success. I don’t know about you, but I think I may need to adopt this as a meditation or mantra to let this concept sink in! SO much of what we have built, earned, or grown has come from working hard and just putting in the effort to make it happen.

I’m not saying that hard work does not have its place - sometimes it is the ONLY way to get from where you are to where you want to be - and there is definitely no shame in that! But I do think that where we get lost is in the performative hustle. When you have lost your identity and instead have replaced it with a constant stream of hustle, to-do’s, etc - almost like you are wearing your crazy schedule as a badge of honor. And I can say that with authority because I have been there.

There were times in my life when I saw my business and ability to put out the “most work” as my “best trait.” And what a toxic way to think! I found my value or worth tied to what I could produce and those times that I couldn’t produce - like maybe I just had a baby or was getting over the flu - I felt useless! Like what was the point of me during that time -  I allowed my self-perception to be tied to my production - and worse yet, I allowed other people to view me that way too!

I have since changed my view and it’s not because I am afraid to work hard or get my hands dirty - so to speak. There are times for that. Just recently Dana and I  spent our Friday removing the kitchen island from our office that we are renovating. Could we have hired it out - sure, did we have the money to do that - yes, would it have been the best use of resources - not that week. We had the time, energy, and drive so we did it. It felt good and productive. Any other week we may not have had it in us and decided to hire it out - and you know what, that would have been ok too!

The point is to take stock of the situation - utilize the resources you have to the best of your ability - and sometimes that resource may be you and other times it may be someone else. Sometimes the BEST thing you can do for a situation is recharge yourself. Drop the hustle identity and just do what makes sense for the situation, yourself, and your resources at that given moment.
